Ferrous Sulfate Introduction

Ferrous Sulfate is a kind of greenish-blue crystalline powder with a chemical formula of FeSO4 · 7H2O. It is odorless and easily soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol. It will be weathered in dry air and easily oxidized to brown basic iron sulfate in moist air.

Ferrous sulfate is the sulfate salt of the divalent cation form of iron. It is an essential body mineral, that is commonly used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Ferrous Sulfate is used as a nutritional supplement (iron fortifier), and fruit and vegetable coloring agent.

Ferrous Sulfate Application

Ferrous sulfate can be used to produce iron salts, iron oxide pigments, mordants, water purifiers, preservatives, disinfectants, etc.

Application Description
Water Treatment Ferrous sulfate is used for water flocculation and purification, as well as for phosphate removal from municipal and industrial wastewater to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.
Reducing Agent Large quantities of ferrous sulfate are employed as a reducing agent, primarily to reduce chromates in cement.
Medical Use Ferrous sulfate is used to treat iron-deficiency anemia and as an iron supplement in food. Prolonged excessive use may cause side effects such as abdominal pain and nausea.
In medicine, it also serves as a topical astringent and hematinic, and can be used for chronic blood loss caused by uterine fibroids.
Colorant Ferrous sulfate is required in the production of iron gall ink and other inks. It is also used as a mordant in wood staining.
It can be used to stain concrete with a yellow rust color.
In woodworking, ferrous sulfate imparts a silvery hue to maple wood.
Agriculture Adjusts soil pH and promotes chlorophyll formation (also known as iron fertilizer). It prevents chlorosis in plants caused by iron deficiency and is essential for acid-loving plants like cycads.
It also serves as a pesticide to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, and tree canker. Additionally, it acts as a fertilizer to remove moss and lichens from tree bark.
Analytical Chemistry Ferrous sulfate is used as a reagent in chromatographic analysis.

What are the precautions for taking ferrous sulfate supplements?

2. To avoid tail discomfort, it may be necessary to take it with food, and taking it with vitamin C (such as a glass of orange juice) can increase absorption.
3. Iron supplements should not be taken with milk, caffeine, antacids or calcium supplements.
