4-Butyl resorcinol is a chemical substance commonly used as whitening additives for skincare products.

Before melanin synthesis, 4-Butyl-resorcinol interferes with the synthesis and glycosylation of tyrosinase, preventing the enzyme from being absorbed by the melanosome. During the synthesis of melanin, it inhibits the activity of enzymes and acts as a competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase and TRP1 enzyme, reducing the formation of melanin-produced by-products. After melanin synthesis, 4-Butyl-resorcinol enhances the degradation of tyrosinase, inhibits the transfer of melanosomes to keratinocytes, and regulates the degradation of tyrosinase.
