Description

Usnic Acid Description

Usnic acid is generally extracted from lichens and fungi. Usnic acid is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has a strong inhibitory effect on most Gram-positive bacteria and also inhibits bacterial growth. If combined with a small amount of streptomycin, the ability to act on tuberculosis is greatly enhanced.

  2. Anti-inflammatory Activity: It has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, which can help in reducing inflammation and pain when applied topically.
  3. Antioxidant Activity: Usnic acid exhibits antioxidant properties that help protect the cells from oxidative stress and damage, hence reducing the potential risks of chronic diseases.
  4. Weight Loss: Usnic acid has been marketed as a weight-loss supplement due to its ability to increase metabolic rate. However, it is surrounded by controversy with respect to effectiveness and safety.
  5. Wound Healing: Because usnic acid has both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, it may be useful in topical preparations to accelerate wound healing.
